This sort of thing pisses me off too (as a white male). Because not only does it diminish anything I do - perhaps somewhat rightfully so - it has the reverse effect of making a mountain for any minority to climb which might not even exist. The "white advantage" more or less tells a minority person "to get something a white person gets easily you're going to have to work harder" when this might not be true. It creates an incredibly demotivating false dilemma.

Its more of a upper class advantage vs lower class advantge and it happens that whites and black are unfortunately usually on opposite sudes of the spectrum.

I understand that trucks will do the most damage, but what I was just offering was that those gas taxes were originally designed for highway upkeep and that passenger cars with wildly different gas mileage should be inflicting similar amounts of damage.
Yes, I know heavier will mean more damage, but the inequitity of the tax based on fuel economy wouldn't (I think) even out the damage versus taxation level. My friend's 1970 1/2 Firebird (6 mpg) would not do more than 10 times the damage of a Prius, would it? More damage surely, but no way would it be 10 times (doubtful it would even be twice), yet the Prius would pay 10 times less for the 'right' of using the roads.
If taxation is designed to ween us from foreign oil and clean-up the atmosphere, then a gas tax is perfect. Otherwise, it needs to be based on miles driven somehow (perhaps along with a weight multiplier).

So what is the alleged "NSFW" security hole? The article never says anything about that. Is it the same "hole" that a USB keychain drive has - that someone could copy sensitive data to the phone, which could then be stolen? Is it because joining a corporate Wi-Fi network could introduce a backdoor through which malware could attack? Something else?
Or is it just paranoia from someone who thinks all devices must have system-crippling amounts of antivirus software in order to avoid being presumed a death trap?

I use Windows 7 at work and recently just built myself a new workstation. Total price including shipping with licenses for Windows 7 Business and Office 2010 was under $850 for a very good performing machine that does everything I need it to do (from Photoshop to AutoCAD) with ease. Right now I've got it totally loaded down and am using 7GB out of 8GB of RAM, and it's ticking along just happily.
I can't honestly say that I would be any more productive by using OS X, and I certainly don't go about my day missing anything in the OS.
Frankly I think it's all fine and good if you want to buy a Mac, but don't fool yourself into thinking that there aren't perfectly good and equally functional options out there for less money. I think the comparison of computers to cars is a stupid one. The difference between a Audi S4 and a Civic is a measurable, but I don't think that is a fair comparison. A more accurate example would be two Civics with equivalent engines and transmissions, only one has upgraded paint, rims, headlamps and leather upholstery while the other is base trim.
Apple serves a growing niche market of high end computers and without a doubt bests nearly every competitor with their excellent industrial design, and a price that reflects the engineering, materials, and slave labor craftsmanship.
But not everyone with a home stereo needs or wants to spend thousands of dollars on Krell mono block amplifiers when what ever comes in their home theater in a box is sufficient for their needs, and they don't want the cool design and minute performance increases.

I always question the sanity of people who use laptops this way.
Color me insane then. Tapping the trackpad is way easier than clicking it, and I don't ever recall making an accidental tap the had any negative impact.

The article states that tax cuts have not worked. They seem to be basing that claim on the fact that the states have not seen improvement in their economies after the tax cuts. That is not the correct metric with which to judge the effectiveness of any policy. The question should be whether the economy would have been even worse without the tax cuts. The article does not address this.
I've lived virtually my whole life in California and have no clue what you're talking about.

As for balance, I'm a big believer in it. In my opinion an "balanced" solution includes tax increases as well as government cuts. Unfortunately, the republicans have fought tooth and nail against tax increases and have tried to balance a 26 billion dollar deficit with cuts. I believe California has one of the highest income tax rates at over 9% for people making over mid-40k. And California has one of the highest sales tax, at 9.75% where I am. And despite this, California has one of the worst budget deficits and some of the most regulations.
Coincidentally, I've been toying with moving to either Washington or Texas and I've finally decided that it's time. For the cost of taxes in California, I could pay my rent in Washington or Texas for the entire year. And I can't think of one thing the California state government provides that the Washington state government doesn't that I would really miss.

MS Office is BUSINESS software, and Google calendars is not necessarily what I would call a widely accepted and adopted business solution. What the typical Office customer wants is Sharepoint and Exchange Server integration.
(Project and Visio ports would also be more than welcome. OmniGraffle Pro is nice, but most hardcore Visio users either don't find it suitable or just are not comfortable with its different user interface.)

I still remember back in August, a Chinese magazine says merom Macbook/Pro will be upgraded in September. And where is it now?
And then there was another rumour that there is a shipment of laptops. And where is it now?
There were also another rumour that merom laptops will be upgraded by the end of August, and will be announce on the same day as dell/sony/... etc. And where is merom macbook/pro now?
All I am trying to say is, the accuracy of these report is very low, and if anyone is putting high hopes in it, be prepare to be disappointed....I think, however, apple will upgrade macbook pro before holiday seasons, and macbook in January.

Agnostic maybe but not illiterate. Would you call a person who knows no more about a pencil than to sharpen it and draw or write illiterate?
Computer are tools to and shouldn't need to be anything more than that to the vast majority of people. Why should they need to worry anymore about the tool than they worry about the pencil.

In CT we are taxed I believe 50 cents on every gallon. The problem is that as gas prices rise people buy less of it and the taxes dry up.

In either case, less gas used or less miles traveled, the burden on the infrastructure is reduced, so in theory less taxes are needed, anyway.

You can teach them the value of a dollar if instead you give them an iTunes card and tell them its the only one there getting for X amount of time.
That is what I do with my brother. And I think this is a better method than using the allowance account. How many people get paid on the 1st anyway? It's usually the 15th.
The big problem with In-App purchasing is the fact that you can spend $0.99, but you also have the option of spending $100+. You could literally buy a new iPhone with that money, even food for a month. Those cards for like IMVU and Neopets that you can buy at the grocery store/Best Buy, DON'T go for more than $50. Same with Wii and Xbox Live.
