So what is the alleged "NSFW" security hole? The article never says anything about that. Is it the same "hole" that a USB keychain drive has - that someone could copy sensitive data to the phone, which could then be stolen? Is it because joining a corporate Wi-Fi network could introduce a backdoor through which malware could attack? Something else?
Or is it just paranoia from someone who thinks all devices must have system-crippling amounts of antivirus software in order to avoid being presumed a death trap?

i actually think apple will probably come up with something that takes existing features/wants/needs of current smartphones/3G phones/etc. and defines/redefines the category somehow, much the way the iPod, while still doing things other players did when it was released, defined all HD based players after it.
maybe it will be the Home on iPod thing, maybe it will be some kind of remote access to your .mac iCals, or maybe it will just be form factor, (or any number of things, those are just off the top of my head) but i would be willing to bet it is NOT just an iPod that makes calls, or a phone that plays music.

If you buy .Mac, you pay mainly for the integration with Apple's iLife applications.
Actually, I pay for the IMAP service and automatic syncing of my contacts, datebook, bookmarks, etc. across both my Macs with an automatic online backup and a web-accessible copy. I am glad to get these services all from one integrated source...in this case from Apple.
I have a Google account too, but Google does not offer Mac users what .Mac offers. I've got nothing against people choosing not to pay for or use .Mac, but I am really tired of people miscasting .Mac as being much more limited than it actually is to get others to see things their way.
If you want the services that .Mac offers, you can get it for anywhere from $45 to $79 per year, or about $3.75 to $6.50 per month. For me, that's a bargain. For others, it may admittedly not be worth it.

Ditto! Slingbox rocks! And it's even more fun when you have a friend or two in other states that allow you to use their Slingbox to watch events that are blacked out in your own area. :)

The resale value of the purchased media drops to $0 the moment I buy it.
I generally agree with your thesis, restricted downloads should be a lot cheaper than new DVDs.
However, I believe that, for the most part, the market for used DVDs has dried up. I was doing pretty well buying movies and reselling them after I watched them (sort of Netflix w/o the subscription or deadlines) but now many of the movies I want to get rid of are often available for $2 + s/h on Amazon. So the only DVDs that sell for a decent price are rare or almost new movies...
Plenty of new DVDs of older movies for $10 or less at your local Target or Wally World.

Are people overestimating Apple's motives? Could it perhaps not be a masterplan but just that the new motherboard, etc they are using just happens to have this component so it's been included? That could explain why it's hidden around the back. If being placed on the back is deliberate it could just be for aesthetics sake as ports on the front will look messy.

If you look at this picture of the new Mini's logic board (http://s1.guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/eBGMrGURJuJjcmlh.huge) from iFixIt's teardown, it looks like the logic board is just wide enough at the front (right side of the board) of the housing to have accommodated the SD card slot. But it looks like it would have been at the expense of either growing the housing so an inserted card sat flush with it, or having the card stick out significantly (and asymmetrically) from the rounded corner.
I really don't get why people who come up with specs don't think ahead. When SD came out it has a 2GB limit. So they updated it, SDHC for a 32GB limit. Now they had to update it again, SDXC for a 2TB limit. They should have just designed the format to scale in the FIRST place.
For example: CompactFlash came out in like 1994 and has scaled all the way up to like 137GB, when the first cards were under 1MB.

for any complex formatting Word is definitly the way to sad to say, its not that bad of an app, although it is filled with bloat....
Pages is stong because of its templates, but its not good for making documents from scratch, if it improved in this area i would stick to it, but the UI definitly needs some work, toolbars and palettes need to be used more effectively and perhaps a bit more customization of the two would help a bit
for now i guess ill be typing up my poetry in Word

I'm seeing my friends head off to uni. And in this current economic climate they are looking for a cheap but durable laptop to do their work on. Windows 7 is the best OS offering from Microsoft yet.
No obligation to spend extra for a Mac, nor is there any desire to join you in your post-PC era and attempt to type many lines of coursework on a Tablet that needs a computer to run anyway.
Macs sales are growing at the same pace as the industry. This industry that is apparently post-PC. Basically, Microsoft are not loosing sleep over Mac sales. Microsoft are not going anywhere.

Flickr Pro is $25 a year, and has no limits. You could get 3-4 years of Flickr Pro for the price of your average nice external drive. I would rather have Flickr Pro, but that is just me.

I bought a Verizon iPad because I have an AT&T iPhone. I figured that if one doesn't work, the other will. I saw no need to get two devices on the same network.

Could be they made many more Verizon models. Could also be that ATT models are being bought for resale overseas. Nothing wrong with that, which is what the OP was implying, I think. Could also be a combination of the two, of course.
Thankfully, there's no moral, ethical, or legal responsibility saying what you should do with your legally obtained, publicly available tech item. You can use it, blend it, sell it to your neighbor, use it as a frisbee, or even carry it on a plane and once you land, you can do all those same things EVEN if your plane landed near a bunch of Asians instead of near a bunch of white people. Crazy, huh?
