About Shaun Ellis

Shaun Ellis has spent his entire professional football career with the New York Jets. He was signed in 2000 and this would be his 12th season with Gang Green. In 2010, Ellis had 36 tackles, 4.5 sacks and one forced fumble. He was pivotal in the Jets' win against the New England Patriots last season. That win put the Jets in the AFC Championship Game.

The Jets' defensive end situation

When the Jets signed first-round draft pick Mo Wilkerson as a defensive end, I knew it was going to be trouble for Shaun Ellis. The Jets are looking to replace some of their veteran starters with rookies. This is the situation with Shaun Ellis. New York is seemingly unwilling to pay more than the minimum salary to extend contracts or re-sign veteran players. Unrestricted free agents, like Ellis, will be forced to accept the minimum pay for veteran players if they wish to stay with the team. It appears to me that the Jets are all about Mo Wilkerson at DE—not Shaun Ellis.

At age 34, Shaun Ellis has a lot of talent and experience to bring to the NFL and the Jets. It would be a shame for New York to let him leave. I feel that Ellis is more than capable as a starting defensive end. The Jets should look at him as a valuable asset. Instead, it seems like they have insulted him with a minimum one-year offer.
