Apple is hosting a Special Event (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060914090209.shtml) today at Photokina. The invite-only media event was first reported (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060821202913.shtml) in late August after members of the UK Press received invitations.

Details on the media event have been particularly scarce, but it is believed the event is currently taking place in Colonge, Germany.

There does not appear to be any live coverage for this event on the web. We will provide links or updates as they are received.

Apple hasn't dipped its toe in the ruggedized computer business, has it? That's bound to be one aspect of army interest.

But perhaps computing devices that survive going to school with students should already be considered ruggedized.

The Army is already using iPod Touches in the field. Put one in an Otterbox case and it's ruggedized.

50th in line at Allen BB, but they did not have much left by the time they reached me, mostly white and 3G that not many wanted, bummer. Target and Walmart in the area has little to nothing either.

Oh... grow up would you. Don't take your bat and ball home. It's a bit of fun, a bit of a chuckle, a bit of rebellion over the xfactor. Just because RATM have won, doesn't mean that the xfactor is going to be axed and Simon Cowell is going back to his Mr Blobby days.

If anything, this has helped the music industry, the thought of actually rebelling against the conveyer belt "machine" being the xfactor has actually inspired people to buy music, getting more people interested in the competition and reducing music piracy. People have supported who they want to win by buying the songs, unlike before, where a few thousand people would buy Joe's song, and the xfactor would win. If anything, Simon Cowell should be happy that there has been an interest in his and RATM's song.

Thanks, but I don't need to grow up. Perhaps you should try accepting other people's opinions without resorting to insults - a much more significant indicator of maturity (unless you're actually asking me to grow older faster?)

There is absolutely zero logic to the rest of your post either. How has this helped the music industry exactly? As I have said all along, the UK chart is a glorified popularity contest. The most popular record, at the time, wins. People don't just buy the xfactor winners single because of the name - they buy it because they like it (and it's usually more than a few thousand btw). Whether you, or I, agree with that is irrelevant. It is fact. There has also been no significant reduction in music piracy as a result of this campaign.

There has been no 'rebellion'. All the campaign has done is increased the amount of money Sony Music Entertainment have taken in this Christmas (both of the Artists are attributed to Sony). This goes back to my original point about the whole thing being meaningless (unless of course the aim was to simply make more money for Sony). There will still be the xfactor next year, and the winner will still sell a barrowload of records.

I'm not buying a tablet until there is one that runs mac OS X (the modbook is too expensive) :D
    

I'm still a firm believer tablet computers need to come with the following to be considered "standard":
    1) Soliataire
    2) Minesweaper
    3) Disk Defrag
    4) A CD Burner

Other than that I do think Woz's comments were right on the money.

has anyone tried syncing the contacts yet? i'm curious what information gets pulled down and tied to a contact besides the profile picture and "links."

I'm wondering this too. I had thought it sounded cool until I got to the "I Agree" screen and saw the verbiage about making sure the info that gets pulled from your phone to Facebook is ok with your friends. I clicked "I don't agree" and decided to cone here to see what others are saying.

    Thanks.

An another note, everybody makes mistakes. I don't think it's necessary to insult some of the parents posting here for their struggles with their children. I bet a lot of the insults come from people who aren't even parents themselves, so they wouldn't have a clue about the complexities, difficulties, and stresses associated with being a parent.

These parents already have their hands full without someone else (who probably doesn't understand anyway) insulting them.

let us know frame rates etc!

My Late-2009 Mac Pro runs it on Ultra settings with no lag or stuttering. I don't know the frame rate, but it looks like it's at least 50fps to me. Very smooth, even during very large battles.

Your i7 iMac should be fine.

Cool redeye, thanks for the update! And it's here about the same, the heat that is. Too hot to get some sleep. So, installing the widget at 00:48 CET is the best thing to do! :D And I think it's time to get this baby out of its Beta status and make it version 1.05. This is appalling. I cannot believe this government intrusion is even legal.

So...where does parenting come into the picture here?! That is the problem with this and many, many other problems in society.

Edit: Posted my response without even reading other comments. Glad to see I'm not alone on this one.

Wait. You live in The People's Republic of Massachusetts and you are astounded by this level of government nanny-ism?

Maybe it's just me, (and maybe this has been said before) but when I first got my "video capable" iPod, I was downloading music videos left and right. Then as soon as TV shows became available I got hooked on "Lost", "Battlestar Galactica" and more...but I quickly found out that the quality was not that great...

I still ended up buying the DVD's of the shows that I really liked, and for those movies that I want on my iPod (for travel purposes) I simply convert them to iPod format, the quality is far better than anything you can download.

Downloading may be convenient, but I will still run to the store for a hardcopy.

And I agree with some earlier comments, once the HD/Blu-Ray war is over and the dust settles, I will begin rebuilding my video library with the winning format, because I can't imagine (yet) trying to download those files.

That's debatable. Apple's reputation in business/enterprise support has never been stellar. Meanwhile, Google literally Velcro together their server farms, using cheap hardware that is vulnerable to failure at single points but is collectively resilient and efficient.

These are extreme ends of the spectrum that I'm using as examples, though.

Google literally Velcro's their server farms? Dang, I should try that.

    Cut defence,

    <Sorry, I needed a quote.> ;)

Defence? WTF!!!! Has anyone actually attacked the U.S. mainland since 9/11??

It should be offence, if anything, as in throwing their weight about the World.

And the U.S. taxpayers are working their asses off, to support this endeavour.

    Nuts, all nuts.

That's basically it. You pay the $100 because you don't want to read, learn and figure stuff out. Every Mac sold comes with enough software that you could set up your own services using your DSL or Cable Internet connection. Macs have web severs, FTP servers, email and "all the UNIX Stuff" You already have an iDisk right there on your desk that could be accessed from any computer that has a browser but it's easier for most people to pay $100 than to figure out how to make it work.

Although there is truth to what you are saying, broadband providers such as comcast do not allow for use of server activity on their networks from home computers. There is also the issue that some of us, such as myself, whom know how to do all that you explained simply just like to take a break form everything and keep it simple. Also, I have multiple computers and will gladly pay the annual fee for syncing.. 4 computers, desktop, office, laptop and wife's office computer all synced. .mac is more then web services.

As for the .mac mail, very happy with it, happy to see the old interface gone.. also love the new address book wish the bookmarks page design would have been updated too (although I only use this when traveling and it works so why fix it?).
